Reviving Iron & Steel Committee of MetSoc: Strengthening Canada’s Steel Ecosystem
Launch: July 2026 , Webinar Series Begins Fall 2026, Special Session COM 2027
Vision
The revival of a Canadian Iron and Steel Committee is timely and strategically important as Canada strengthens its steel sector to support national sovereignty, economic competitiveness, industrial resilience, and sustainability. Canada’s unique geography, climate, natural resources, and evolving infrastructure needs, require a national platform to advance steel technologies, foster innovation, and address emerging challenges specific to the Canadian context.
Immediate strategic priorities include advancing the transition to low-emission ironmaking and steelmaking through integration of alterative reductants and increased scrap, supporting the development of steels and standards for hydrogen, CO2, and alternative-fuel transportation infrastructure, as well as strengthening Canada’s domestic capabilities in high-performance steels for defence, marine, and other critical applications. Through these efforts, the Committee will help build a more competitive, sustainable, and resilient Canadian steel ecosystem aligned with national priorities, while enabling international networking with professionals.
Intended Audience and Activities
The Committee brings together representatives from leading steel producers, end users, supply-chain partners, universities, and research institutions to identify emerging challenges and opportunities in the Canadian iron and steel sector, while aligning collective efforts with national priorities and evolving geopolitical needs.
The Committee contributes to the Canadian steel ecosystem by:
- Organizing industry-driven workshops, targeted symposia, webinars, and joint short courses and training programs in collaboration with industrial and academic partners.
- Recognizing excellence through awards, distinctions, and professional recognition programs.
- Supporting professional development by engaging, mentoring, and creating networking opportunities for students, early-career professionals, and emerging leaders in the steel community.
